“My name is Olena Ilienko, I am from Ukraine, my mother is Romanian and my father is Ukrainian, I know Romanian from my mother. I came to Romania in March 2022, ten days after the great war started. My mother was born in Romania, her name was Emilia, and she was 5 years old when World War II started. Unfortunately, her grandchildren are now living in war time, just as she did during her childhood.
Thinking of her tiny house, I remember the smell of soap and of the yellow flowers, I am not sure what their name is, I have the same flowers in my garden in Kiev, it’s the scent that reminds me of my grandmother’s house.
My mom was very, very beautiful, she was so beautiful that everyone fell in love with her. But she chose dad.”
